SSgt. Reckless, The War HorseThe greatest war hero horse in American history, Staff Sergeant Reckless, served with the 5th Marines during the Korean War. She carried nearly 5 tons of ammunition to front lines during the battle to retake outpost Vegas. In 1997 SSgt. Reckless was honored as one of Life Magazine's Top 100 American Heroes. Horse Show Benefits TRFSCOn Saturday, June 4, 2011, the first annual Camden Equine Circuit horse show was held to benefit the SC TRF at Pine Tree Stables in Camden, SC. The turnout was great, the participants enjoyed their rides and the TRF was able to continue its policy of creating opportunities for exposure around the area. The show will be larger next year and garner additional support from local and travelling riders. Prizelist donors OTTB Designs and Fenwick Equestrian, offered beautiful saddlepads and leg wraps to qualifying class winners and we certainly appreciate their support! The show manager, farm owner and show judges volunteered their property and professional time and the volunteer crew, made up of TRF board members and other TRF supporters all spent their day helping the cause. Thank you to everyone who participated in this show and there will be more opportunities for volunteer support in the future! 2011 Boykin Spring FlingThe Spring Fling was a huge success and thank you to all the riders who came out to support the TRF and view the spectacular countryside! There were over 130 riders this year. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their ride through swamplands, upland fields and forests and along the Wateree River. Thank you to the landowners- the South Carolina Department of Corrections, the Shirley family, the Guy family and the Wooten family. Their generosity provides a truly special setting for this event. Our volunteers are the best and a very special Thank You is reserved for our faithful Spring Fling leader and tireless organizer, Diana E. DuBose, without whose hard work and skills this would not have been possible. Make plans for next year! I am sure the rider list is already 130+ strong! Pictures coming soon!

The South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (SC TRF) at the Wateree River Correctional Institution offers a place of hope and renewal...a true second chance..for retired Thoroughbred horses and prison inmates. At the SC TRF's barn, known as Seabiscuit Stables, the horses are safe, well cared for and loved. The inmates selected for the program become not only students learning marketable job skills for the equine industry, but also caregivers. For many inmate/students this is their first experience with expressing and receiving love as well as being responsible for the day to day welfare of another living creature. The transformation for man and horse is nothing short of miraculous. When the inmate/students, who successfully complete the Second Chances program, are released from prison, they return to life outside the walls better prepared emotionally, mentally, and practically to become contributing members of society.
