There will be a metric century, a 50 mile, a 30 mile and a short leisure ride. In general, we will be reversing the previous routes for this year’s ride. The routes will pass through Camden and travel south to Spring Hill, Boykin, Horatio and then loop back to Camden. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The leisure ride (8-12 years old parent required) will not exceed 10 miles and will stay within Camden.

The start time will be 9:00 AM and the ride will leave from Historic Camden, 222 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Welcome to South Carolina Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

Sea BiscuitThe South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (SC TRF) at the Wateree River Correctional Institution offers a place of hope and renewal...a true second chance..for retired Thoroughbred horses and prison inmates. At the SC TRF's barn, known as Seabiscuit Stables, the horses are safe, well cared for and loved. The inmates selected for the program become not only students learning marketable job skills for the equine industry, but also caregivers. For many inmate/students this is their first experience with expressing and receiving love as well as being responsible for the day to day welfare of another living creature. The transformation for man and horse is nothing short of miraculous.  When the inmate/students, who successfully complete the Second Chances program, are released from prison, they return to life outside the walls better prepared emotionally, mentally, and practically to become contributing members of society.

The SC TRF together with the national TRF work tirelessly to rescue and retrain Thoroughbreds who would otherwise likely be sold at "killer auctions" in this country for transport to Mexico and Canada where they are brutally slaughtered and their flesh sold to fancy restaurants in Europe, Scandinavia and Japan where it is considered a delicacy.

New CEO of the National TRF Visits Seabiscuit Stables

Larry Taylor, CEO of the National Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, and his wife, Denise,
visited the farm located at Wateree River Correctional Institute on July 15, 2010. The visit to SC was one of the first on his introductory tour of the national and local
facilities across America. We were very proud to have him in Camden and Larry expressed how
impressed he was with the quality of the facility, the horses and the men in the program. William
Cox, President, and Page Hodson, Secretary, along with farm manager, Lt. Tim Amerson,
conducted a facility tour to show off the grounds and participants in the Second Chances
Program.
